I tried Allen Carr’s book. It was great, but it didn’t help me psychologically, when I was stressed out. I tried Zyban and the Nicotine patch. Now, I know I must go deeper and quit cold turkey. Has anyone read any good books about quitting or know of any seminars with hypnosis.

There is only one way to quit, YOU HAVE TO REALLY WANT TO QUIT. Trying anything else without the will to quit won’t work. Trust me I have quit three times now. It’s too expensive or the Dr. says I have to quit are not good enough. It has to be something you are determined to do.

How ’bout trying Chantix? I would suggest you ask your doc about it, perhaps get a prescription…My dad is a chain smoker, and his doc put him on that, and now it’s been 3 weeks, no ciggies!!! Give it a try! Also, you may want to try relaxation techniques, to help you cope w/the edginess involved w/quitting! Check out these links, for help:

well i smoked for several yrs. and what made me quit was self motivation. i told my self that i dont need them and stopped. i got stressed out once, and smoked one cigarette. when i smoked the cigarette, i felt like i failed myself, and the people who i told that i quit to. so after that, i didnt even finish one, put it out. i coped with the quitting by keep telling myself that i cannot lose, im not going to fail this time. and now its been several months and i feel good about qutting.

    go to freshstartmethod.com

I quit with zyban for 3 years
I quit with the patch for 2 years

fresh start was cold turkey after hypnosis and it was the easiest method by far….You can do it.

The problem is this: everyone is different. Your biology, physiology, and psychology are different than other people. So what works for one person might not work for another. I suggest going to discuss this with your doctor. Too many books and products out there are only there for some guy in a suit to make money. The best thing to do is to get an objective professional to help you. In the end, it will probably take multiple tries, and a combination of methods, but your doctor will be the best place to start. Whatever works, I know you can do it! Now if I only could convince my mother. It is really tough. You’re not alone in going through this. Good luck!

I have quit smoking after smoking for 10 years and as you have I had tried several books, and zyban. I had a scare of throat cancer which was benign and my nurse told me about a book called the Tao of quitting smoking by Joe Weaver. It is a spiritual approach to quitting smoking. It helps you go inward and discover why you smoke and how to stop. The book is kind of harsh at times, but I followed all the assignments in the book and at the end of the book, I was disgusted with smoking. Now of course what worked for me may not work for you. The point is to NEVER give up. If Allen Carr’s book didn’t work, then try another book. IF that doesn’t work. Keep on reading and going to websites, such as the American Cancer Society. Go to your local hospital and see if they have any smoking cessations programs. It takes a lot of reading different websites, books, help of family, friends to quit. Just know that if I could do it, You can also do it. I would also recommend joing quitsmoking bulletin boards, such as http://www.quitsmokingsupport.com/boards.htm. There are thousands. I think Weaver’s book helped me because it allow me to do some soul searching. It hit deep. Please don’t give up. Quitting smoking can take time. But my God, now that I have quit, I don’t miss it. I actually hate smoking and can’t be around anyone who smokes.
